“Otago was the only choice for me,” she says. “Along with having the only Dental School in New Zealand – making it the only place where all the scopes of dentistry are working and learning in one building – it also offers a university experience that is second to none.
“Otago prepared us well for the 'real world'. We got trained in best practice so our standards are exceptionally high, but there's always more to learn from life experiences and our colleagues!”
Janine is currently working with a private practice in Wellington and is also interested in working in Pacific Island Health, an area she says could be greatly improved.
“Being Samoan, I want to be part of making a change in this area. Changing the little things in people's daily routines greatly impacts their lives. It's great to meet up with patients over time and see how much you've helped them improve their health.
“Oral Health is a very special degree that allows you to influence both children and adults, so working life is never boring.”
Janine was “overwhelmed” by the amount of support she received during her time at Otago, both from the Pacific Island Health Professional Students' Association and from the Dental School.
“It's scary thinking about moving away from home but it's a one-of-a-kind experience. The atmosphere, the people, the culture, not to mention the top-notch education – it's all worth it!”
