I have been lucky enough to be take part in the various Pain Management papers offered by the Musculoskeletal Department at the University of Otago.
I currently work as a Pain Nurse Specialist as part of the inpatient Pain Service at Auckland City Hospital. The content in these papers has vastly increased my knowledge around pain and the complexities of managing this for my patients. In particular, the Neurobiology of Pain paper has given me more confidence in teaching about the anatomy and physiology of pain and how wonderfully intricate we humans are!
The Psychosocial and Cultural Aspects of Pain paper has been invaluable in changing my practice and I believe it has improved our patients understanding of what is happening for them during a significantly challenging time.
I believe that the management of pain must start in an acute setting. We have such power to influence the outcome for each of our patients and it is imperative that our understanding of pain continues to grow and develop as we discover more. I have thoroughly enjoyed my studies with Otago and look forward to continuing on towards my Masters.
