“Food is everywhere and it not just wanted by consumers, it is needed by consumers. Food product development and packaging will always be an essential industry and is exciting and ever changing.”
Marianna McEwan has wanted to be a food scientist since she was 12 years old. And now she has joined the packaging team at Frucor as a packaging technologist.
Following graduation, Marianna completed the 12-month technical graduate programme at Frucor Beverages. Within the programme she spent time in technical support, packaging, manufacturing and the quality departments. Within the different teams Marianna worked on technical projects ranging from factory trials and lab work to office work.
The diverse range of papers offered by the department, particularly the product development paper (FOSC311) with Barkers jams along with the experience she received at Heinz Watties provided Marianna with the knowledge and experience to excel at Frucor.
“Working at Heinz Watties made me understand the relevance of what I learnt in the classes and textbooks. The Heinz Watties scholarship provided me with very valuable industry experience which assisted me in getting a graduate position at Frucor Beverages.”
The University of Otago presented an exciting atmosphere and university culture. Living and studying in Dunedin away from home makes the Otago experience unique and rewarding. You can meet new people from New Zealand and overseas and gain a well-respected degree.
The diverse papers and innovation aspect to the Food Science degree at Otago made it an appealing choice for Marianna and has prepared her for a career in the food industry.
