Finance is a fantastic degree if you enjoyed maths at school and want to apply your ability to the real world, according to BCom (Finance) graduate McGregor Fea.
McGregor is doing just that, having secured an investment banking job with First NZ Capital in Auckland, after completing the recruitment programme which included a summer internship.
His role is divided into three distinct categories: mergers and acquisitions, capital raising and corporate advisory – all of which draw on skills picked up in his studies.
McGregor loved the number-based papers – especially those with lots of formulas or calculus, and has always been intrigued by markets and business. Later, the MBus programme (now replaced by the MFinc) gave him the opportunity to continue focusing on Finance and earn himself a highly reputable postgraduate degree – perfect for job applications!
“A Finance degree from Otago will allow you to pursue various occupations with most New Zealand corporations. At the same time, the University provides a great platform for students to mature. This definitely happened for me, so by the time I entered the workplace, after my internship, I felt very prepared to take on a new challenge.
”McGregor had an awesome time playing rugby for the Dunedin Sharks while at Otago, and has “incredible” memories of having the Rugby World Cup in town in his second year. “The Argentinian supporters were particularly fun but the Irish game was simply unforgettable.
”He was also involved in a business renting sound equipment, lights and live music to students.
McGregor believes there's no better place to study than Otago. “You'll have the time of your life, and employers actively seek Otago graduates, which gives you a leg up when you graduate.”
