Working as a physiotherapist in private practice l became increasingly interested in joint biomechanics and related dysfunction. I completed a Postgraduate Diploma in Manipulative Therapy based in Auckland. That was some time ago and more recently l felt the urge to increase my knowledge base and have access to up-to-date resources in the musculoskeletal and pain fields of health science.
The ability to study, work and pursue other interests while in a family environment made distance learning an attractive option. Originally aiming to complete a Postgraduate Certificate in Health Sciences endorsed in Musculoskeletal Management, l found the core pain papers increased my understanding of the mechanisms involved and changed my approach to dealing with patients in both acute and chronic pain. Motivated by the relevance of these and subsequent papers l completed towards the Postgraduate Diploma in Health Sciences endorsed in Musculoskeletal Management, I continued on and am now studying towards my Masters.
I am currently working within the hospital in the musculoskeletal outpatients department and have an interest in the recovery and rehabilitation following total knee joint replacement. This will be the basis for research which l plan to undergo next year obtaining a greater understanding of the lived experiences of these patients and identifying areas for enhanced management.
