The Cancer Awareness in Aotearoa New Zealand (CAANZ) research programme is focused on raising awareness and uptake of cancer protective behaviours, at an individual/whanau level, and interventions to support these at organisational, community and policy levels.
Awareness is a broad term that encompasses knowledge, attitudes and beliefs about cancer risk and the cancer journey. Understanding and being able to modify awareness is an important part of encouraging uptake of healthy behaviours, both among individuals and also within the organisations which create the physical and policy environments that support or discourage healthy lifestyles.
