Most postgraduate majors in the Applied Science programme have space for approved papers outside the primary subject, allowing you to personalise your degree, add additional focus, and highlight your strengths and interests.

Below, we suggest some papers (but not an exhaustive list), that you may like to consider and discuss with your advisor.  These papers are generally open to non- or semi-specialists. However, they may require specific background knowledge and/or Departmental permission to enrol, so please check details before attempting to enrol.

Communication and media

Students interested in communication with a broader audience are encouraged to take SCOM 439. Beyond that, other 400-level SCOM papers or papers such as MFCO 410 provide additional focus.

  • SCOM 439 Introduction to Science Communication - A distance-taught introduction to models of science communication, theories of what science is, audiences and publics for science communication and how to communicate widely and effectively.

Data analysis

A variety of analysis papers are available to upskill students with different preparation or contextual interests:

  • HASC 413 Biostatistics (15 cp) - Essential analytical methods necessary for health-related research, including key statistical methods. Relevant to students interested in biological sciences (especially health) who would like to improve their analysis skills. No prior statistics knowledge is required, but good algebraic skills are assumed.
  • INFO 411 Machine Learning and Data Mining – Learn theory and application of machine learning using Python. This paper assumes a reasonable mathematics and statistics background.
  • INFO 420 Statistical Techniques for Data Science - Explores a range of statistical techniques for data analysis, from statistical modelling of univariate data to the visualisation of patterns in multivariate data. Relevant to students with some previous exposure to statistics that wish to improve their analysis skills.
  • MART 448 Advanced Business Analytics - Application of advanced analytics in a business context using SAS. Relevant to students with some previous exposure to statistics that wish to improve their data management and analysis skills.
  • QGEN 401 Quantitative Genetics and Improvement - Modern methods for quantitative genetics. Useful for students interested in genetic applications in science. Normally requires STAT 435.
  • STAT 435 Data Analysis for Bioinformatics - Topics include an overview of genetics and molecular biology; genetic, genomic, and proteomic technologies; analysis of large data sets; incorporation of biological information into the statistical analysis process. Relevant for students interested in data analysis of complex biological data. Assumes prior biological or statistical knowledge. Some knowledge of R is beneficial.

Design and technology

For students interested in the interface of science, technology, and design, applied in the biomedical field.

  • BIOE 403 Bioengineering Design - Design for a medical / bioengineering application resulting in a product, system, process or communication outcome.
  • BIOE 404 Medical Devices and Technology - Design and fabrication theory for medical devices and associated technologies.

Entrepreneurship

These papers will be of interest to students across all applied science subjects who are interested in entrepreneurship.

  • ENTR 411 Introduction to Entrepreneurship - An introduction to the concepts of entrepreneurship.
  • ENTR 415 New Venture Strategy - Planning and managing growth in a new entity.
  • ENTR 421 Technology and Entrepreneurship - Explores the development of innovative business models and new commercial ventures within the field of science and technology.

Environment

Otago offers a wide variety of environmentally-focused papers. Too numerous to list them all, below we highlight options linked to environmental management, Otago's unique location and interdisciplinary approach to science, and technology in environmental studies.

  • GEOG 471, 472, 474 The Geography Department offers a wide variety of papers linked to environmental management; the three listed here are Impact Assessment and Sustainability, Developments in Environmental Management, and Coastal Management
  • GEOL 463, 473 Geology offers 10-point modules at 400-level in Paleobiology and Evolution, and Paleooceanography and Paleoclimatology.
  • MARI 431 Antarctic and Southern Ocean Science: a hands-on exploration of Antarctica and the Southern Ocean marine ecosystem at a physical and biological level.
  • SURV 509 Introduction to Remote Sensing Technology; or, if you have previous GIS knowledge, also consider SURV 511 Spatial Analysis and Modelling.

Health

For students focusing on health-related applications that want to broaden their knowledge of health systems. Note, several of the options below have non-standard teaching schedules or require special permission and therefore require consultation with the respective departments.

  • BITC 406 Health Research Ethics - Basic ethical aspects of health research on humans.
  • PUBH 711, 712, 713 – These 15 credit point, 6-week intensive papers would appeal to students interested in public health. Options are (PUBH 711) Principles of Epidemiology; (PUBH 712) Foundations of Hauora Māori; and (PUBH 713) Society, Health and Health Promotion.
  • SPEX 440 to 461 – These papers are based on modules in exercise and sport science, sport development and technology, or physical education, activity and health. Contact the School of Physical Education, Sport and Exercise Sciences for details.

Professional practice

These papers would be relevant to students across all applied science subjects.

  • APPS 499 Applied Science Work Experience (5 cp) - Preparation of a detailed professional report on work experience in a suitable industry for the student's chosen major subject. Pass/fail.
  • PMAN 501 Advanced Project Management - An introduction to basic project management, including the four phases of projects (initiation/feasibility, planning, implementation and completion) and consideration of resources involved (i.e. people, money, equipment, time, machines, and materials).
