These professional development courses are designed to instil confidence in health professionals when applying hauora Māori competencies in a clinical setting.
You will be introduced to the Hui Process and Meihana Model – both are proven frameworks that allow health professionals to provide appropriate care and treatment for Māori patients and their whānau in a way that avoids tokenism, promotes genuine collaboration, and creates a pathway to advocate for Māori health equity.
Flexible, self-paced study
Developed by leading Māori health researchers and clinicians, our courses are designed to fit around your busy schedule. Choose between a 100 per cent online course, or blended online and in-person learning.
If you choose the online-only study option, you will be given access to the online learning modules to complete at your own pace. The blended online and in-person option comprises the same online modules, with the addition of a one-day immersive workshop held at our Christchurch campus, and an additional Transformative Practice module.
About the course
There are slightly different versions of the course tailored to health professionals working in different clinical settings, but the core aspects of the modules and (where applicable) the workshop are the same across all versions of the course.
Online learning modules
Each module is a comprehensive learning experience, featuring written materials, videos, and quizzes. Plan to spend approximately two hours on each module.

Hauora Māori workshop (in-person):
- Engage in team-based learning activities to strengthen your knowledge of the Hui Process and Meihana Model.
- Participate in simulated patient sessions to practice the application of these models to clinical practice.
- Work collaboratively with whānau in complex healthcare scenarios.
Transformative Practice module:
- Reflect upon your application of the Hui Process and Meihana Model in your healthcare practice.
- Share insights and experiences with fellow learners.
