All students enrolling at the University of Otago must be proficient in the use of English. Where English is not a student's first or native language, English proficiency may be demonstrated via one or more of the categories outlined in sections 1–6 below.

Some programmes have higher requirements, and information on these programmes is included in section 7 below.

The information on this page is valid for both domestic and international applicants.

1. English requirements met via admission criteria

English language requirements are fulfilled if you meet admission criteria in the following categories:

Those entering the University on the basis of NCEA, or Cambridge International or International Baccalaureate (IB) taken in New Zealand, must meet the standard literacy requirements for admission through these categories – they cannot be replaced by IELTS (or similar) tests. Applicants entering the University on the basis of Cambridge International or IB taken outside New Zealand may meet the literacy requirement through an approved alternative as outlined below.

2. English proficiency tests

An English proficiency test result that meets the minimum requirements listed below for the level of study applied for is sufficient to fulfil requirements. The test must have been undertaken no more than two year prior to the date you begin your study at Otago. This may be extended to five years on a case-by-case basis if you are able to provide evidence of continued immersion in an English-speaking environment (e.g. English language work experience or further study).
