The University, City and Region
The University
Yonsei University, established in 1885, is the oldest university in Korea. Its educational mission is based on principles of truth and freedom.
Yonsei is particularly fortunate to have a spacious, quiet, and well-wooded campus located just 15 minutes away from the economic, political, and cultural centers of Seoul's metropolitan downtown. Yonsei is proud of its long history and reputation as a leading institution of higher education and most international university in Korea. The university offers a unique student culture—with the highest foreign student enrollment (43%) in Korea.
The International Yonsei Club (IYC) is composed of Yonsei students who are interested in building stronger ties between Korea and the rest of the world. IYC arranges retreats, activities, language exchanges, and forums. Since its opening in November 2002, the Global Lounge has played a central role in promoting cultural diversity on-campus.
The City of Seoul
The fifth largest city in the world, the Seoul metropolis has a population of about 10.3 million. It is a centre of finance, arts and culture, and with its low crime rate is known to be one of the safest large cities in the world. Seoul is a global city, one of the world's top ten financial and commercial centers, home to large conglomerates such as Samsung, LG and Hyundai-Kia.
There is a blend of old and new in Seoul with modern high-rises and trendy shops mixed in with ancient temples and palaces. Many interesting South Korean attractions lie close to Seoul and are ideal for tourists considering possible day trips. The Korean Folk Village is nearby and known for its traditional culture, wood carving and dancing.
