Information
The Va’a o Tautai – Centre for Pacific Health | POPO Pathway Scholarship was established in 2023 to encourage Pacific students to undertake study in Health Sciences and enable success towards undergraduate degree programmes. Pacific students bring unique cultural perspectives and insights to the field of Health Sciences. Their understanding of cultural norms, values, and practices can contribute to more culturally sensitive and effective healthcare delivery within their communities and others.
Scholarship detail
The scholarship grants the recipient a guaranteed spot in one of the University of Otago residential colleges. The Scholarship is valued at $15,000, which will go towards accommodation costs at the residential college.
Selection of recipients
Once applications are received, they will be initially assessed for eligibility. In brief, applicants must fulfill the following criteria to be eligible:
- Be of Indigenous Pacific ancestry.
- Be a New Zealand citizen/resident.
- Be a current high school leaver (applicants who have been out of school for more than one year will not be considered)
Applications will be distributed to a panel who will assess each application for suitability for the Scholarship. Applications will be scored and evaluated by the selection committee members using predetermined criteria. Each committee member independently reviews and scores the applications. Based on the evaluation scores, the selection committee shortlists candidates who best meet the scholarship criteria.
Please note that we may require finalists to participate in interviews, either in person or remotely. The interview panel assesses candidates' suitability and passion for the scholarship's purpose. The selection committee will then make the final selection of scholarship recipients, taking into account application scores, interviews (if applicable), and the scholarship's objectives.
