Overview
Master of Science (MSc) and Master of Surveying (MSurv)
The School offers both a Master of Science degree and a Master of Surveying degree, entry to the latter being restricted to those students who have a four year undergraduate Surveying degree (or its equivalent). The MSurv is generally a two year programme open to those candidates who have obtained a degree in Surveying. The papers taken in Year One of the programme are identical to those taken by PGDipSci students with progression to the second (thesis) year being restricted to those students who obtain a B- average (or better) in Year 1 (Link to School Research Themes for guidance on thesis study topics). A student who obtains a BSurv with distinction, a BSurv (Hons) 1st class, or equivalent qualification, may be admitted directly to the thesis year of the degree.

Master of Applied Science in Geographical Information Systems (GIS)
The School offers a Master of Applied Science degree in Geographical Information Systems. The MAppSc in GIS can be taken as either a two year (papers and thesis) or one year (thesis only) programme. The papers taken in Year One of the programme include a choice from the same group of papers as for PGDipAppSc students and a research preparation paper running out of Geography. Progression to the second (thesis) year is restricted to those students who obtain a B- average (or better) in Year 1. The thesis research project in Year 2 is conducted in some aspect of GIS or remote sensing of interest to the student and has supervisory support from within the School.
Entry to the Masters degree is open to those candidates who have a undergraduate degree in GIS, Surveying, Information Science, Geography or another cognate discipline with a substantial component of GIS and / or remote sensing. Entry to the one year thesis only option requires the candidate to have an Honours degree (or equivalent, such as a non honours degree plus a postgraduate diploma) in a suitable discipline.
