Suite-style accommodation for a great living experience

Accommodation at Toroa is suite-style – where the rooms are arranged in units of single bedrooms with shared kitchen, living and bathroom facilities.

Suite-style living combines privacy with ample opportunity for interaction with others in your unit, and with the rest of the Toroa community.

To ensure a comfortable and positive environment that is conducive to study, our staff provide supervision and work closely with residents.

Your room is your space, so you can poster the walls and bring personal items to make it your home while you're studying with us at Otago. Our rooms are all of similar size, with similar furniture, fixtures and fittings.

Each room is furnished with:

  • A king single bed
  • A desk
  • Plenty of wardrobe space
  • Shelving
  • A study lamp

We encourage you to make your room your own.

Shared units

Each of our residential units has a kitchen and living area shared between five or seven residents (flatmates), as well as a shared bathroom.

Manawa

Students can book the Manawa common room for activities by reaching out to staff to place a booking. This space will also be available for external functions catered through Campus and Collegiate Life Services or the University's Events team.

Manawa is a great space to study, relax, watch the big-screen TV, play games, and chill with friends. It also has a rooftop garden terrace surrounded by the sights and sounds of nature and city life.

Each unit of five or seven bedrooms has its own shared kitchen, living area and bathroom facilities.

Manawa lounge

The Manawa common room facility is available for booking by students and for external functions.

Toroa is camouflaged by its setting of beautiful trees, which gives it the feel of a peaceful green space while being right in the heart of the city and very close to campus. We use our grounds for outdoor BBQs, get togethers, and lazy afternoons in the sun.

Toroa is located an easy three-minute walk from campus and a five-minute walk to the heart of the city.

Internet

Internet access is available to residents at no additional charge. Connectivity is provided as an extension of the University's internet services, on a best-endeavours basis. Where practicable, access is via the University of Otago wireless network. Additionally, the University provides wireless and wired internet access around the campus in areas such as libraries, study areas and common spaces. Please feel free to speak with us if you have any questions or need any assistance.

Scanning, printing and copying

We also have a scanner and printer for your use, and copying can be done in the main office area.

We aim to provide our residents with a secure environment that is conducive to study and peaceful living.

Security is a shared responsibility, and we encourage our residents to help us keep Toroa a secure environment. To help us achieve this we have put the following safety and security measures in place.

  • Access to our community after hours is via closed gates, with swipe card access
  • Smoke detection systems
  • Staff are trained as fire wardens and in first-aid
  • Security cameras within the College grounds
