The MCom in Tourism programme gives graduates the opportunity to go on to further study at PhD level or embark on a non-academic career where the ability to undertake and/or interpret high quality research is a core component of their work.
The Masters of Commerce in Tourism (MCom in Tourism) programme:
- Provides students with the opportunity to undertake multi- or inter-disciplinary supervised (normally by one supervisor) innovative research in tourism and related fields of inquiry
- Offers students the opportunity to examine aspects of the phenomenon of tourism from social, cultural, commercial, environmental and/or scientific perspectives
- Involves one year of full-time study (or equivalent) towards the completion of a research thesis (note: there are no taught papers component to this programme)
- Is designed to develop students' research skills; incorporating their ability to engage with and critically examine theoretical and conceptual literature, methodologies, and data collection and analysis methods

Information for MCom in Tourism applicants
Applicants must be a graduate, normally with qualifications requiring a total of at least four years of tertiary study in tourism or a related discipline with an average grade of 75% (B+) or higher. As part of their degree all applicants should have completed a dissertation and gained a grade of at least 70% (B).
Applicants must meet the University postgraduate English language requirements, if their first language is not English. This must be organised prior to enrolling in the programme, though not necessarily at the time of application to the programme.

All applicants will be required to submit the following information to tourism.masters@otago.ac.nz, which will be assessed by the Department.
If provisionally accepted to the programme by the Department of Tourism, applicants will be required to complete the appropriate application form (see below):
- CV
- Grades from previous degree/s
- Copy of dissertation from previous degree
- A research proposal that is at least 2 pages long. This proposal should outline the research that the candidate intends to undertake for their MCom in Tourism. It should examine the aims of the research and ground them in the appropriate academic literature. The proposal should also outline the methods to be used to collect the data necessary to meet the aims of the research. As this research will be undertaken under the supervision of a member of staff of the Department of Tourism it is important that applicants check staff research interests to ensure there is overlap between the research the applicant is proposing and the research interests of at least one member of staff
