International students
Undergraduate
University Flats primarily provide accommodation for single-semester international undergraduate students. Private rentals in the Dunedin campus area generally only provide for fixed-term leases for 12 months (ie: 1 January to 31 December annually), making it very difficult for single-semester students to find suitable accommodation in the private market.
In order to assist international students for the short duration they are in Dunedin, University Flats also engage a number of New Zealand-based students (normally one per flat) who will assist the international students in enjoying the “Otago” experience. These students normally reside in a University Flat for the full academic year. These students are referred to as Kiwi Hosts.
University Flats will also consider full-degree international students.
In order to fairly allocate rooms a Residential Selection Policy has been developed and can be read our handbook.

Postgraduate
University Flats also provide limited accommodation to single-semester and full-degree international postgraduate students.
These students are generally offered accommodation for the duration of the calendar year they arrive at Otago and are subject to our Residential Selection Policy.
Domestic students
In 2025, we will be considering applications from domestic students who have created a full flatting group in one of the Otago residential colleges and wish to flat together upon exiting.
We do not accept applications from individual domestic undergraduate students (unless applying to be a Kiwi Host).
Domestic postgraduate students are welcome to apply.
