Professor John Broughton is Director of the Ngai Tahu Maori Health Research Unit. He is also associated with the Department of Preventive and social medicine and the Department of Oral Diagnostic and Surgical Sciences.

He is also a New Zealand Maori playwright and recipient of the Bruce Mason Playwright Award. His plays include

He wrote the libretto for the musical ShowBand Aotearoa with music by Rim D Paul.
