Professor Kurt Krause is interviewed the the Listener about New Zealand's ability to protect itself from Ebola. He says New Zealand's infection control personnel and clinicians routinely handle HIV and hepatitis cases and would respond appropriately to a case of Ebola. Strict isolation of affected areas has always been the hallmark of handling outbreaks of Ebola or Marburg.
Professor Krause says it appears the initial outbreaks have spread into four different countries in part because they were unable to apply the kind of strict isolation that is needed to handle this kind of event.
