Professor Kurt Krause appears in the April edition of the Listener magazine article "Antibiotic Emergency" by Sally Blundell. Professor Krause led a bid to create a Centre for Molecular Biodefence Against Infectious Pathogens for a comprehensive response to the needs of infectious diseases. "We need new antibiotics, new vaccines and good surveillance to put New Zealand on the front foot".
In a similar vein, a recent news article describes the threat that antimicrobial resistance poses to modern health care. The article focuses on carbapenemase-producing Enterobacteriaceae (CPE) which are resistant to nearly all known antibiotics. The article recommends establishing a national response plan to address this "clear and present danger".
