The UN 2015 landmark agreements and the WHO health emergency and disaster risk management framework – how do these support local and national policy and practice?

The Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction 2015–2030 signals a shift from reactive crises to proactive disaster reduction. Landmark UN agreements (Sendai Framework; Sustainable Development Goals; COP21's Paris Climate Conference; World Humanitarian Summit; Habitat III) create immense opportunities to collaborate and coalesce across the many different and overlapping policy areas. In this talk Professor Murray will give an overview of the global shifts for health amongst these agreements.

Speaker – Professor Virginia Murray

Professor Virginia Murray is Head of Global Disaster Risk Reduction at Public Health England and has been providing health, science and technology support for the implementation of the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction 2015-2030. Virginia qualified in medicine in the UK. She was Director of the London based Chemical Incident Response Service from 1995 before joining the Health Protection Agency where she was appointed as Head of Extreme Events and Health Protection in 2011; which became Public Health England in 2013. Virginia takes forward work using evidence-based information and advice, on many hazards including flooding, heat, cold and climate change adaptation. She works closely with the World Health Organisation, particularly on the WHO Health Emergency Disaster Risk Management Framework launched in 2019.
