The Education Unit oversees and assists staff in the design, development, maintenance, and evaluation of the Otago Medical School MBChB curriculum on the Wellington campus. The Unit also supports staff professional development and represents the Wellington ALM programme on various subcommittees of the Medical Curriculum Committee.

The Unit is headed up by the Associate Dean - Education Unit (ADME) and includes an Education Adviser, eLearning Facilitator, Clinical Skills Director, Regional Clinical Education Advisers, media production support and administrative staff.

The Unit also hosts the Director of the Education Development and Staff Support Unit, the OMS Education Adviser for Staff Development, and the HEDC Teaching Fellow – Student Learning Development.

We're here to support you with:

planning, development, delivery, assessment, creating AV material, eLearning development, course evaluation, student learning support, professional development, confirmation path processes, and educationally focussed research.

Associate Dean Medical Education (ADME)

The ADME is responsible for leadership in the development of the MB ChB curriculum within the University of Otago, Wellington campus and regional sites as part of the Otago Medical School.

The ADME coordinates course delivery through liaison with module convenors and with the School Curriculum Committee to ensure that the School is meeting the overall objectives of the medical programme. The ADME is also responsible for the 5th year OSCE examination, the orientation course, and overall timetabling.

Student Learning Development – advice and support for study

The Higher Education Development Centre has one staff member dedicated to providing Student Learning Development services at the Wellington campus. Dr Ruth Toumu'a is available Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays 8:30am–3:20pm for support, advice, skills development and coaching in any study-related area including academic writing, presentation skills, time and task management, research, and exam preparation.

Students are encouraged to book ahead by email for Zoom or email-based individual or small group consultations. Staff referrals are welcome, and in-class tailored skills development workshops are available on request.

OMS Education Adviser for Staff Development

The Director EDSSU is responsible for the co-ordination of the Education Advisers' OMS role and sits on the MB ChB Curriculum Committee and other committees in an educational advisory capacity.

The OMS Education Adviser responsibilities are to coordinate and develop current school wide staff development activities​ and to identify and initiate future opportunities.
