Role
Phillipa Barnes is a Research Fellow at the University of Otago, Wellington. Her main research interests are respiratory and allergic disease health in children. Phillipa has worked on a number of projects within this arena including a prospective infant cohort study looking to identify childhood risk factors of asthma and allergies; a randomised control trial of probiotics in the prevention of eczema; and a study to compare exhaled nitric oxide obtained from two devices by different manufacturers (Medisoft HypAir FENO and Aerocrine NIOX analysers). Phillipa is currently working on three HRC-funded projects. Firstly, the HOME Study, which examines what housing factors may be associated with new onset wheezing in children. Secondly, the Probiotics in Pregnancy study examines whether giving probiotics to the mother early in pregnancy prevents eczema in babies. Lastly the Rhino Study, looking at whether simple interventions to a child's bedroom environment can reduce the incidence of rhinovirus infections.
