The Art of Palliative Medicine - 2017 Semester 2
Mrs. X identified with both Asian and Pacific cultures. Because of this I decided to present her story through a medium of pacific art. It is because of this I decided to use traditional pacific patterns and design to honor this culture. I also wanted to honor her Asian heritage, therefore I added the kanji for family in the center. This not only pays tribute to her family but also to all other “families” that she has. The empty triangle in the middle represents Mrs. X as being the center of the artwork and a very stable individual. The three flowers represent her three children which are integral parts of how she copes with everyday life. The koru are support systems which Mrs. X uses. There are two kinds of koru in this picture. One of the koru is a blend of two coming together in the center. This koru signifies the more cohesive support systems for Mrs. X which are most valuable due to the people and relationships that she has in this group. The other koru is singular, and is on the outskirts of the artwork. These koru represent stable support systems that have more limited contributions to Mrs. M's care including her medical careers.
