For the artistic piece I drew the patient's dog to symbolize her energy and youth before she was fraught with cancer, represented by the chain around the dog's neck. When we knocked on the door, the first thing we heard was the patter of paws on the floor as it jumped at the door from excitement of impending visitors. In my drawing, the dog's face is bathed in light, in the present, but surrounded but darkness, by the unknown future. Bound by chains, the dog can no longer live the life it used to, as the cancer diagnosis has bound the patient. The dog is looking up in hope, towards the light above, that perhaps the last few years will be happy and meaningful. The dog does not look sad however, like the patient, he is at peace.
