The Art of Palliative Medicine - 2017 Semester 2
I chose acrylic paint as my choice of media as I felt I could best express myself through this type of media. I think that for me personally it is easier to express feelings through painting than it would be through formal essay. In my painting, I tried to illustrate the end of life in a sunset and that there is beauty in the end of life but also darkness.
I tried to communicate several ideas to the audience in my painting. The central idea was to represent the end of life by a sunset. I wanted to represent the end of life in a more abstract way than say for example painting a hospital bed since I wanted it to be more emotive. In the sunset, I incorporated the surrounding darkness of clouds to represent the difficulty of facing the end of life. However, in the central area of the painting I kept some light since I think many people can still gain joy from their last moments of life, especially with support from family, friends and palliative care. I also wanted to draw a landscape that would feel isolated to represent the isolation a person can feel at the end of life.
