The Art of Palliative Medicine - 2018 Semester 2
I chose to portray the idea of how a person experiences an illness based on how they perceive it: their perception and mindset has a huge impact on the way in which they experience an illness. I tried to depict this idea by painting flowers. On one side the flowers are prospering, they are alive and the colours are warm. On the other side, the flowers are wilting, they are dying and the colours are dark. This draws connections with and mirrors the different ways in which people can experience an illness. I used this as a motif to describe that it is possible to be positive in situations that would normally be experienced as negative.
The man we visited has terminal cancer and there is no cure, however; instead of wallowing in the pits of despair due to his diagnosis, he is happy and content with life. I think this is a direct result of his positive attitude which has shaped how he experiences his illness and why he continues to live a full life despite knowing that he will die.
