The Art of Palliative Medicine - 2016 Semester 1

Reactions

I chose to use photography because I felt that it was easiest way for me to convey the idea that I wanted to explore after talking to my patient. The main idea that really stuck with me after to talking to my patient is that it's not always the main illness that has an effect on whether or not she has a good day. It seems so much effort goes into managing and coping with their illness that it doesn't leave a lot of room for coping with the small things when they go wrong. So for my patient, when she has a bad day, it's because something small has gone wrong not something big. It is the 'small things' becoming 'big things' that I've tried to convey through my choice of media. The series of black and white photos depict idioms people use when panic has broken out about small things: there's no point crying over spilled milk; It's all much ado about nothing; You're making a mountain out of a molehill.
