The Art of Palliative Medicine - 2017 Semester 2

The Next Step

The main thing that struck me from our conversation was the grace and strength he showed in the face of his disease. He was ready to die, to leave the existence and body he was trapped in, but never once showed resentment or self-pity for his condition. He talked to us easily, smiled, laughed. Though he was ready to move on, he hadn't given up on his life and was determined to carry on as well as he could right until the very end. The drawing depicts a man crossing the River Styx on a bridge and being greeted by the Grim Reaper, with canes, a wheelchair, and an IV drip stand abandoned behind him.
