The Art of Palliative Medicine - 2017 Semester 1

To see the flowers bloom

I chose to paint my patient, Ms X, sitting out in her garden with her cat and surrounded by flowers. I chose to do this because both Ms X and I are passionate about art and I feel that a painting has more meaning and can communicate more emotion than an essay. At the visit I saw someone flourishing and valuing life, valuing herself and her loved ones, valuing the plants in her garden and the colours they display. Even when she knows that she will likely only see one more spring, she is happy simply that she'll see the flowers bloom, and she is living fully while she can. This not only proved to me that it is possible to appreciate the life one has, but also how important it is to do so, and how wonderful it can be.
