In response to an RFP from the MBIE Social Research Fund

We use disease economic modelling to assess up to 15 new interventions that contribute towards healthier lives and habits. For each intervention, modelling generates estimates of health gains in quality-adjusted life-years (QALYs), health inequality impacts, cost, and cost-effectiveness; to assess the impact on cancer, cardiovascular disease (CVD), diabetes, and obesity. In addition to informing policy-makers directly, these models will also be used (along with stakeholder engagement) to prioritise pilot and other primary research studies. This latter research will provide new knowledge in and of itself for end-users, but also provide updated parameters and tested assumptions to update the modelling for policy-makers.

Selected interventions to model in 2014-16

  • Enhanced dietary counselling by a practice nurse (whole-of-NZ)
  • mHealth dietary advice for weight loss (txt message/smartphone app/internet-based)
  • Intermittent fasting for weight loss
  • Abdominal aortic aneurysm screening
  • Cardiovascular disease risk factor management
  • Home modifications to reduce falls in the elderly (with Counties Manukau DHB)
  • Self-management programme for patients with type ll diabetes (most likely) or another chronic condition (with Counties Manukau DHB)
  • Smartphone-based smoking cessation
  • Mass media promotion of the Quitline Service
