Would you like to learn more about effective engagement with whānau Māori? Are you considering how to enhance information gathering when working with Māori to determine the best way forward, with the potential of advancing Māori health?
This in-person course is designed for those who are working with or going to work with whānau Māori in health settings. Through a combination of presentations, facilitated group discussions and activities, this course will introduce participants to models such as the Hui Process and Waikare o te Waka o Meihana (Meihana model).
The Hui Process applies traditional principles of engagement in contemporary practice. The Meihana model was built of the foundation of Te Whare Tapa Wha and incorporates the concept of Nga Hau e Wha to ensure contextual health environment factors are attended to. These models provide a framework for effective relationship building and enable culturally cognisant assessments to be undertaken in diverse health settings.
Style of course
Small group (maximum of 40 participants) teaching. Guest presentations, small group discussions and scenarios.
Who should attend?
This course is designed for those who have some background knowledge of the hauora Māori context, or experience in working in health, and will be of interest to those working in iwi development, health services, NGOs, health policy analysis and whānau, hapū, iwi and Māori communities and provider organisations, and also those who are currently studying in this area.
By the end of this course participants will be empowered to reflect on and strengthen their own practice (models of engagement and assessment) when working with whānau Māori with a view to contributing to improving health inequities.
