Introduction to NVivo is a hands-on workshop designed as a practical guide to NVivo for new and experienced researchers. Drawing on real-world examples from applied and published research, the workshop provides a pragmatic tour of the latest NVivo software. Students will have an opportunity to try out NVivo on their own data set and on mock data used for training purposes. A step-by-step guide to the key functions of NVivo is provided, with a strong emphasis on those features that best support robust qualitative analysis. Taught by an experienced qualitative researcher and active NVivo user, this workshop is about getting the most of out of NVivo with the least fuss.
Topics covered
- Getting started (creating new projects, navigating the NVivo workspace)
- Preparing data (creating new documents, importing data, working with external data, managing source material)
- Coding for data analysis (creating, editing, organising, and examining nodes)
- Annotations and memos
- Exploring your data (reports, queries, using attributes)
- Fancy tricks (auto coding, sets, matrix coding)
Style of course
Computer lab – hands-on course combining theory, discussion and practical exercise. Course attendance is limited to 20. This course will be held in person in Wellington.
Who should attend?
This course is aimed at people new to NVivo or wanting to build on their basic skills. Many people attending will be research students or experienced researchers and evaluators new to the software. The skills covered in this workshop can be applied to a range of qualitative methods (e.g. thematic analysis, phenomenological analysis, grounded theory) or to pragmatic research and evaluation projects. By the end of this course participants should have the fundamental knowledge and skills to use NVivo in everyday research and evaluation. This NVivo workshop is designed primarily for users of the latest version of NVivo on a Window platform, but is suitable for users of older versions of NVivo.

Teaching staff
- Professor William Levack PhD Dean and Head of Campus at the University of Otago Wellington. William has 20 years' experience with QRS International software, beginning with NVivo 2 in 2002, since which time he has mentored multiple research students and colleagues in its use.
Location
This course will be held in-person at the Wellington campus of University of Otago in Mein Street, Newtown (next to Wellington Regional Hospital). Specific directions to the course reception/room will be sent the week before the course start.
Course cost and registration
$375 early bird, $500 after Thursday 19 December 2024.
A 50% discount is available to full-time students, those unwaged and University of Otago staff.
