Ka hanga whare te tangata, ka hanga tangata te whare
“The people build the house and the house builds the people”

Housing is a primary determinant of health and wellbeing. Explicitly recognising and supporting Māori wellbeing is of critical importance if individuals, whānau, communities and neighbourhoods are to thrive. The Whakawhanaungatanga Māori Wellbeing Model centers on the concept and practice of whakawhanaungatanga – making and strengthening connections and relationships that enhance and uplift the mana and mauri of Māori in housing contexts.

This course will explore a new learning and development tool – a guide –based on the Whakawhanaungatanga Māori Wellbeing Model created at the New Zealand Centre for Sustainable Cities by Dr Guy Penny (Tāmaki Makaurau/Ngāti Kahungunu ki Wairoa) and Dr Lori Leigh and published in 2024. Our material will engage anyone involved in New Zealand’s housing or health sector.

Participants will be presented with the Māori Wellbeing Guide and workshop its contents for practical application. Join us to explore diverse ways of using the guide as an educational resource, a design checklist, an advocacy tool, or as a starting point for engagement with Mana Whēnua and other Māori institutions.
