Thursday 13 February 2025 (Online)
Introduces health impact assessment (HIA) that aids decision-making by predicting the potential effects of policies, programmes and projects on health, well-being and health inequities.
This practical online one-day workshop aims to introduce participants to an innovative way to strengthen wellbeing, health and equity in policy making at local, regional and national levels. The approach, Health Impact Assessment (HIA), is a process that aids decision-making by predicting the potential effects of policies, programmes and projects on wellbeing, health and equity.
Topics covered
Participants will be introduced to the theory and methods of HIA using New Zealand HIA guidelines. Successful and unsuccessful New Zealand HIA case studies will be presented and critiqued. Participants will also be introduced to social impact assessment (SIA), a similar method used in NZ that provides another way into decision making.
Participants will have the opportunity to apply the guidelines to scenarios based on real situations. Consideration of equity will underpin the training. The workshop will draw on the experience of the participants and the extensive national and international experience of the teaching staff.
Style of course
Online workshop with lectures and facilitated small group breakout groups. Discussion and practical exercises. Reflection on how to apply the learning to your current or future work environment.
Who should attend?
The workshop is aimed at planners and policy makers from central and local government, health staff, researchers and members of the community with an interest in wellbeing, health and equity. Previous successful workshops have included people from planning, housing, transport, social welfare and health. As the course is introductory, no prior experience or learning in HIA is required.
