Abstract
This study focuses on communication in obstetric care interactions where there is deemed to be a high risk to either mother, baby or both. Video-recordings of a sample of actual consultations are being analysed in close detail to describe the interactional processes unique to these ante-natal encounters. These empirical observations will be compared with the perceptions expressed by each participant in post-consultation interviews. The overall aim is to explore which factors make a 'high risk' consultation more or less satisfactory or challenging from the perspectives of the patients and clinicians.
