Use the correct term to refer to those who have graduated from the University of Otago or those who have completed a paper but did not graduate and are not currently enrolled. The term can include ex-staff. When referring specifically to the University office, put an initial cap on Alumni. Avoid alum which is a chemical compound.

  • alumni – plural men (or men and women)
  • alumnus – single man
  • alumna – single woman
  • alumnae – plural women
  • Otago alumni are invited to attend tonight's Capping Show performance.
  • Teacher Greg Lawson is a Master of Teaching and Learning alumnus.
  • Anna-Maria Spiroff is an Otago Law alumna specialising in corporate law.
  • Jane Grant, Dr Louise Lacier and Lisa Hoffman are said to be among the most successful alumnae in the University's history.
