Use parentheses to suggest related yet unnecessary information. Include punctuation marks before the closing parenthesis only if the complete sentence is in parentheses. Otherwise, punctuate after the closing parenthesis.

  • Today's lecture will start at 4:30pm (which is later than usual).
  • Today's lecture will start at 4:30pm. (That's later than usual.)
