The term refers to a professor's post (not the professor himself/herself). Thus, use chair in, not chair of. Also: holds the chair in … and is the professor of … (NOT is the chair). Avoid using chair of committee. The person presiding at a meeting is the convener, not the chair.

  • Professor Singer holds the Chair in Public Finance.
  • Gerald Singer is a professor of Public Finance.
  • The Chair of Public Finance is Professor Singer.
  • Professor Singer is the Chair of Public Finance.
