Cabinet 14: Ernie Webber - Collector
Ernie Webber, 'Magazine Receipt Charts' folder, 1949-1980.
Collecting has been defined as ‘the selecting, gathering, and keeping of objects of subjective value’ (Muensterberger, 1994), and could be expanded to include organising, deselecting or dispersal. Whether Ernie Webber actually actively dispersed any of his collection is not known. He did however try to organise his collection, some 40 metres of books, pamphlets, maps, timetables, blue-prints, and ephemeral items about rail. His method of recording which magazine issues he received is on display. Even before Excel spread-sheets, it is an effective one. And of course, to buy old and new publications, he was reliant on in-coming catalogues and brochures, of which a few are on display.
