Graham Billing – 1973
Graham Billing's mention of the little wooden villa housing the Psychology Department at James Macandrew University evokes a strong comparison with the University of Otago and the Leith. Indeed, while the Burns Fellow for 1973, Billing wrote the first draft of his novel The Primal Therapy of Tom Purslane, completed a number of essays for the Listener and New Zealand Today, and was commissioned to write a biography on the Todd family. Personal circumstances then intervened. Primal Therapy was finally published in 1980 by the Dunedin firm Caveman Press.
