Expertise

Our Background

Our academic experience in geography and surveying as well as our practical experience in industry and government informs our applied research.

We use a variety of tools to analyse and communicate our research. These broadly fall into the categories of geospatial science - including remote sensing, photogrammetry, GIS, geovisualisation, and spatial statistics - and climatology with a focus on seasonal snow and glaciers. Our field work underlies and supports the modelling we do to better understand mountain environments and how they change through time.

We work closely with a range of partners to ensure maximum societal benefit from our work.

Brewster Glacier

Our Expertise

Field measurements

Field measurements

We conduct fieldwork in alpine environments, including designing and maintaining weather stations, the use of specialised equipment (e.g., fixed-wing and multi-rotor drones and precise GNSS), and in-situ and remote glacial mass-balance measurements.

Meteorology

Meteorology

We observe and model climatic variables, perform climatic downscaling and reanalysis, and link changes in the cryosphere to atmospheric processes. Our expertise in climatology has a particular focus on the cryosphere as well near-surface processes in the atmosphere.

Remote sensing

Remote sensing

We collect and analyse a variety of remotely sensed data, including imagery from UAV (drone), aerial and satellite platforms, as well terrestrial and airborne LiDAR. We use these data to map changes to New Zealand’s mountains to, for example, track seasonal snow at multiple scales.

Photogrammetry

Photogrammetry

We build on foundations in photogrammetry to develop precise, accurate terrain models leveraging cutting-edge tools and techniques. This allows us to measure snow depth (even from space) for improving hydrologic models, and, to quantify 3D topographic changes across landscapes.

Spatial analysis

Spatial analysis

We use a wide range of spatial analysis techniques to improve our understanding of mountain environments. Analyses include estimating glacial mass-balance losses, understanding controls on snow distribution and identifying landscape-scale slope instabilities.

Modelling

Modelling

We model changes to mountain environments using frameworks from a variety of fields to, for example, integrate snow and hydrologic models for improved forecasting for water resources and simulating snow avalanches to assess risk to people and infrastructure.

Visualisation and communication

Visualisation and communication

We specialise in creating interactive, immersive data visualisations for engaging the public with mountain research. Our 4D animations show changes to mountain systems through time, and our web GIS support public exploration of data.

Collaboration and engagement

Collaboration and engagement

We engage partners on applying research findings. Partners include recreation industry, CRIs, conservation groups, government agencies, and the research community in NZ and across the world. Our collaboration drives research design and supports high-quality research outputs.
